With grow your own becoming more and more popular since the crisis trying to save a few pennies by eating their own home grown produce. Not to mention delivering flavours that supersede those of the retailers.
Following suit we also gave this a whirl and with the amazing British summer of 2014 and we had both some successes and some disappointments.
Firstly the strawberries were fantastically red and juicy but were mostly lost to the garden pests. However we also grew some salad and had much success with our herb garden, growing rosemary and mint, although constantly reminding guests that we can do more with this mint just make mojitos!
The greatest results were from the tomatoes plant. Planted in spring it sprouted into a huge success feeding us with over 100 tomatoes. From the final harvest with still lots of green unripened toms remaining, we took these out and left in a bowl exposed to sunlight to ensure that the fruits finished their journey.
A top tip would be to stay on top of the produce regularly trimming overgrown branches and removing ripened produce before the insects attack.
With this years season over we have removed all the remains and are preparing the garden to replant for next year. The best autumn crops are peas, beans, garlic and asparagus. So get sowing to ensure that your 2015 is as fruitful as your 2014.
